Ireland

There are four instruments in Ireland, all of which are under the charge of Eoin Moran with the Irish Meteorological Service. They are a Robertson-Berger UVB meter, a commercially available gallium arsenide diode based UVA detector, and a commercially available silicone diode based broadband photopic detector; all three are located Malin Head, near Donegal. These instruments, two of which are developed by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in England (formerly the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB)), constitute the Solar Monitoring System (SMS) run by the HPA in Ireland. In fact, there are a number of SMS's already deployed by the HPA in the UK. A fourth instrument, a Brewer Mark IV spectrophtometer is also deployed at the Valentia Observatory, near Cahirsiveen. This data is submitted to the World Ozone and UV Radiation Data Centre (WOUDC). All instruments undergo regular calibration.
