New Zealand

New Zealand operates a total of 27 instruments, 19 of which are in New Zealand. The New Zealand instruments are operated and managed primarily by two scientists: Richard McKenzie, who works for the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA) and Gerald Smith, who works for Industrial Research ltd.(IRL). Funded by NZ's Foundation for research Science and Technology (FRST), NIWA's UV spectrometers began building a UV climatology in Lauder, NZ in 1989. In 1995, NIWA and NOAA began a collaboration to build a climatology of the spectral distribution of UV radiation at the Mauna LOA Observatory in Hawaii. Today, all NIWA data is incorporated into the NDSC network (Network for the Detection of Stratospheric Change).
All NIWA systems measure irradiance, with the exception of UV-8 in Tokyo and UV-M in Lauder, which measured spectral actinic fluxes from February to May 2004. NIWA is also responsible for several real-time UV index displays which are mounted in public places (e.g., swimming pools in Wellington and Alexandra). However, data from these sensors are not logged. NIWA also has developed the NZ UV atlas, which is a software tool for deriving erythemally-weighted UV from the global pyranometer data at about 70 sites in NZ.

NIWA instruments are operated and owned by partners elsewhere: In the U.S. by NOAA, in Australia by the Bureau of Meteorology, and in Japan by the University of Tokyo. At NIWA in Lauder, there are UV instruments operating from other networks: NZ's IRL network (Dr. Gerald Smith), and The University of Erlangen Germany's Eldonet network (Prof. Donat Haeder). See the table below, the web link, or contact Richard McKenzie for more information on NIWA UV monitoring efforts.

New Zealand's National Institute for Water and Air operates several ozone and UV monitoring instruments in Lauder.

Richard McKenzie knows of a couple more instruments in New Zealand (Christchurch and Hamilton). However, as far as he can tell, they are not being maintained. Also, over the summer of 94/95 they have a Brewer Monochrometer performing cross calibrations. All instruments listed above are still operational. Complete surveys for each site are non- existent except for the Antarctic site. The only missing information is how often measurements are taken with each instrument, as well as the date at which some of these instruments started.
